Attomax golf ball review: Analyzing the world’s most expensive golf ball

Here’s  the first mistake: “Get ready to boost 15 to 20+ yards to your usual distance.” Those are the first words you see when you go to Attomaxgolf.com. “The longest golf balls you’ll ever own,” it reads at the top. Wouldn’t it make more sense to market this claim based on percentage of your usual distance rather than total yardage?

Okay, okay, this is not a hit piece on the new Attomax golf ball. In fact, we have some great things to say about the most expensive golf ball in the world. Let’s get into it.

Attomax golf ball price

You might want to take a seat before reading on. The cost for a dozen Attomax golf balls is $249. You read that correctly. That comes out to $20.75 per ball.

For comparison, the #1 ball in golf, the titleist Pro V1, is $58/dozen or $4.58 per ball.

  • Attomax golf ball/dozen: $249
  • Attomax golf ball/single: $20.75

For what it’s worth, Attomax’s “Limited-Time: Free 2-Day Shipping” promo has been consistently offered to me for the two weeks I have been researching these balls.

Note: They are sold only by the dozen, and they are available through the Attomax website and Amazon.com.

Is the Attomax golf ball legal?

As of May 3, 2023, the Attomax golf ball was not on the long list of conforming USGA balls. It is illegal to use this in USGA-sanctioned events. The list of conforming golf balls is updated the first Wednesday of each month. There are no rumors of the ball becoming legal anytime soon, but I have heard Attomax will release a conforming and legal ball in the near future.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) is the not- for- profit national association of golf courses, golf clubs, and the governing body of golf in Mexico and the United States.

THe USGA cooperates with The R&A (The Royal and ancient golf club of St. Andrews) to essentially make, interpret, and govern the rules of golf.

What makes a golf ball legal?

For a golf ball to be legal/conforming to standards, it must go through test protocols for equipment standards where the USGA will test three things:

  1. Overall Distance and Symmetry Procedure
  2. Initial Velocity Test Procedure
  3. Weight and Size Test Procedure

The rules regarding golf ball regulation and equipment:

  • Golf balls are nonconforming if the ball is asymmetrical.
  • Golf balls must adhere to specific measurements of distance and initial velocity capabilities through various trials.
  • Golf balls are nonconforming if the diameter surpasses 1.6800 inches, or 42.67 mm.
  • Golf balls are nonconforming if the ball exceeds 1.620 ounces, or 45.93 gm (there is no minimum weight).

The 3 most expensive golf balls*

  1. Attomax Golf Balls: $249/ Dozen
  2. Dixon Fire Golf Balls: $74.99/ Dozen
  3. Pro V1x-left dash: $68/ Dozen

Attomax golf balls: How to pick the right one?

One thing I love is the simplicity to choose which Attomax golf balls are right for you. Attomax offers three balls based on your club head speed.

  1. Hard (Club head speed 97+ MPH)
  2. Medium (Club Head Speed 86-96 MPH)
  3. Soft (Club head speed 50-90 MPH)

As a competitive golfer for 20+ years, I’m still a little unclear about which Titleist is right for me. Pro V1? Pro V1x? Attomax seems to have eliminated the guessing.

The Attomax technology

In short, this ball is marketed as “The perfect golf ball” because of the amorphous metal alloy casting. Amorphous metal is a highly elastic “bouncy” metal because the atom structure is not crystallized, rather, it’s random. Because of this, energy is transferred more efficiently. This is their secret sauce.

“The Atomic Trampoline” is what the Materials Research Science and Engineering Center at University of Wisconsin-Madison famously called amorphous metal.

Amorphous metal is not new; it’s been used in products ranging from sharp knives to armor-piercing ammunition for the military. YIKES.

The Attomax Claim: Add 20 yards to your drive

“In a certification test conducted using a WRC-approved robot swinger, the Attomax golf ball flew 13 to 18 meters (15 to 20 yards) more than the 13 types of golf balls from 10 other brands. Certified its Attomax golf ball as the world’s longest golf ball.” This is their claim.

Does Attomax actually add distance to your drives?

“I did not find that these golf balls were the longest in the world”- Rick Shiels Golf on Youtube.

Attomax vs. Competitors

Attomax vs. Pro V1

In this same sample size, Rick Shiels hit 10 Pro V1’s and 10 Attomax. He hit them alternating to make it a fair real-life test. His findings?

Differences

  1. Difference in ball flight
  2. Difference in sound

“The Attomax golf balls, and I’m not exaggerating this, almost double the height”

“The loudest golf ball I have ever hit in my life”

Similarities

  1.  Ball speed
  2. Carry distance

Out of the 10 shots, the three longest were Pro V1’s.

There are some big positives here for Attomax.

1.)   If this ball is carrying the same distance as the Pro V1 and it is going almost double the height, what would the distance be if you hit an Attomax ball with a lower-lofted driver?

2.)   Since you are hitting it higher than the Pro V1, if you caught some downwind, how much farther would the Attomax carry?

Both of these hypotheticals I could see being positive for Attomax. But is it worth the price tag?

Attomax Return Policy

“We have a 14-day return policy.”

“Your item must be in the same condition that you received it, unworn or unused, with tags, and in its original packaging,” according to their website.

Not bad, but it isn’t Fleet Feet Running Co. “Happy Fit guarantee,” where you can run in the shoes, dirty them up, and return them in any shape within 60 days for a FULL REFUND!

It is generally known that TaylorMade is one of the best in the industry for customer service. For the high price tag, Attomax would be wise to take that route. Would be a big opportunity to win over some happy customers.

Who is the Attomax golf ball for?

If you have loved ones that golf or some clients you want to make happy, Attomax could be a great Christmas gift. For $250, you could give a sleeve to four important people: a few clients, your boss, loved ones, co-workers. Four birds, one stone?

If you need something to raffle off for your next outing, this ball could be something to purchase and add to a prize basket.

If you want to impress your friends, genuinely want to try out the technology, and/or enjoy the finer things in life—this ball is for you. From the box to the technology, this ball is quality. The buzz and stories you’d get for whipping these bad boys out at your next round could make it well worth it.

Who is the Attomax golf ball not for?

This ball is illegal and currently non-conforming; therefore, if you are a competitive player, this ball is not for you.

If you lose a lot of golf balls, maybe find a more budget friendly ball.

If you don’t want to spend $20 on a golf ball when the second most expensive ball on the market is $5…this ball is not for you.

My final thoughts on the Attomax golf ball

It’s genius. While I cannot justify the features and benefits being worth the high price tag, I will say I absolutely love what Attomax is doing from a marketing angle.

Do you remember “The Roadster,” Tesla’s first electric car model? Released in 2008, this car was priced extremely high for its time at over $100,000. It received unfavorable criticism because the high price tag did not make the Roadster a widely accessible consumer product.

So what was Tesla thinking? Is Attomax modeling this strategy? In my opinion, Tesla was positioning itself as a “premium” product. So when they released a more budget-friendly product, everybody wanted in.

I see Attomax conceptually taking a similar route, that is, releasing a premium product now, creating buzz so they can sell to the masses later. For this to work, though, they have to play the long game. Time will tell.

There are rumors Attomax will be releasing another ball in 2023-2024. If it’s legal, more budget friendly, and good quality: They might have hit a homerun.
